Negative taken for March 24, 1960, Arkansas Gazette article "It Takes Skill, Intuition to Start Thoroughbreds Running," B1:2. Carroll E. Burns is the official starter for races at Oaklawn Jockey Club at Hot Springs, Garland County, Arkansas. It is his job and that of his six assistants to get the horses and jockeys into the stalls and start the race. This can involve settling the horses, who sometimes rear up as they are put in the stalls. Burns will also pass the word along to trainers to "school" a horse that has acted up. Schooling is a morning activity in which the starters and trainers get a horse ready for competition. Burns is standing on a ladder by the starting gate as the race begins.
